Anwesha Dey, a 30-year-old doctoral student from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, went missing on May 3, 2015. She was last seen leaving a friend's house near 23rd and S Streets in Lincoln, Nebraska, and was walking home alone that evening during stormy weather with heavy winds. A surveillance camera captured her falling into Antelope Creek at approximately 7:27 p.m.
The creek was shallow at the time, only about three feet deep, but the current was strong, and Dey, who could not swim, was swept away.
Extensive searches were conducted along the creek and its connected waterways, including Salt Creek and the Platte River, but no trace of her was found. Authorities believe Dey likely drowned, as Antelope Creek eventually flows into larger water bodies, but her body has never been recovered.
Originally from India, Dey had moved to Nebraska to pursue her graduate studies in biological sciences. She had transitioned from practicing Hinduism to Buddhism after moving to the United States.
