On a crisp autumn evening in Crandon, Wisconsin, a gathering of young friends at a post-homecoming party turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. Among those present was 18-year-old Jordanne Michele Murray, a white female, who was enjoying an evening with her friends on October 7, 2007. The night took a tragic turn when her ex-boyfriend, 20-year-old Tyler James Peterson, arrived at the apartment where the party was being held.
Peterson was a full-time deputy with the Forest County Sheriff's Department and a part-time officer for the Crandon Police Department.
An argument erupted between Peterson and Murray, reportedly stemming from their recent breakup after a four-year relationship. Enraged, Peterson left the apartment only to return with his AR-15 style rifle. He forced his way back into the residence and opened fire, shooting approximately 30 rounds. The small apartment became a scene of chaos and terror as Peterson methodically shot the people inside. Jordanne Michele Murray was among the six individuals who were fatally wounded in the rampage. The other victims were all students or recent graduates of Crandon High School, their lives cut short in a matter of minutes. A seventh individual was critically injured but survived by pretending to be dead.
After the shooting, Peterson fled the scene, leading to a manhunt. He made contact with law enforcement, admitting to being the shooter. Authorities eventually located him at a friend's cabin in the nearby town of Argonne. Following a standoff and negotiations for his surrender, more shots were fired. Initially, it was believed Peterson was killed by a police sniper. However, it was later determined that after being wounded in the arm by a sniper, Tyler Peterson died by suicide, sustaining multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds. As the sole perpetrator, his death concluded the search for suspects, leaving a small town to grapple with a profound and devastating loss.
