On a November evening in 1976, 19-year-old Dean Heagerty told his mother he was stepping out for a short walk from his family's home on East Sixth Street in Oswego, New York. He left wearing a dark green corduroy jacket, green fatigue pants, blue sneakers, and a knitted hat that was either brown or blue. This departure, on November 21, 1976, would be the last time his family ever saw him. At the time of his disappearance, Dean was described as being 6'1" and weighing around 140 pounds, with blond, shoulder-length hair and blue eyes. Dean's disappearance was particularly concerning due to his state of mind at the time. A former class president at Bishop Cunningham High School, he had enrolled at the State University of New York at Oswego but struggled to adjust to college life. This led to a period of depression and confusion, and he eventually dropped out. His family reported that he had been experiencing memory loss and was under a doctor's care. He had left home on previous occasions, sometimes traveling to other states, but had always made contact with his family. Prior to his disappearance, he had been hospitalized for what was described as a "nervous breakdown." In the days and years that followed, the search for Dean yielded few concrete leads. Investigators considered the possibility that he may have been attempting to travel to Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, where his older brother lived. There were some unconfirmed sightings of a person matching Dean's description in Pennsylvania after he went missing, but these were never substantiated. The Oswego City Police Department has kept the case open, and in more recent years, developed a DNA profile from family members to compare against national databases, though this has not yet led to a match. The disappearance of Dean Heagerty remains an unsolved case, a painful mystery for a family who has waited decades for answers. The prevailing theories range from him succumbing to the elements or an accident, to the possibility of foul play, or simply starting a new life elsewhere while suffering from amnesia.
