On a warm Fourth of July evening in 1977, in the quiet town of Hubbard, Ohio, 26-year-old Billie Lynn Groff vanished from her home on Westview Avenue. She was a mother to two young children, a son and a daughter, and was in the midst of a tumultuous period in her life. That evening, while her husband and children were out attending the local Independence Day celebration, Billie was on the phone with a friend. The conversation came to an abrupt end around 10:00 PM when Billie mysteriously told her friend, "They are coming up the driveway, I have to go". It remains unknown who "they" were that she was referring to. When her husband and children returned home around 11:00 PM, Billie was gone. She had left behind all of her personal belongings, including her clothing. At the time of her disappearance, she was reportedly wearing a white t-shirt, blue cut-off jeans, and thong sandals. Two days passed before Billie's husband filed a missing person report with the Hubbard Police Department. The investigation into her disappearance would uncover a troubled marriage. Friends and family described her husband as controlling and abusive. At the time of her disappearance, the couple was reportedly going through a divorce. In a peculiar turn of events, her husband provided the police with a four-page document that outlined what he perceived as his wife's shortcomings. This, coupled with the delay in reporting her missing, raised suspicions among those close to the case. The investigation included searches of wooded areas and lakes, as well as the unsettling excavation of a portion of the Groff's backyard, though nothing was found. Decades have passed since Billie Lynn Groff was last seen and heard from, yet her case remains an open investigation with the Hubbard Police Department. Over the years, law enforcement has continued to pursue leads and utilize advancements in technology, such as facial recognition programs, in an effort to uncover what happened to the young mother. The case has received renewed attention through television programs, bringing her story to a wider audience and sparking hope that new information may come to light. Despite these efforts, no charges have ever been filed in connection with her disappearance. The central mystery of the case continues to be the identity of the person or people Billie saw coming up her driveway on that fateful July night. For her children, who were just seven and ten years old at the time, and the rest of her loved ones, the passage of time has not diminished the pain of her absence or the hope for answers.
