James Edward Lewis, a 42-year-old decorated Army veteran, disappeared on October 3, 1982, after leaving his home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Lewis told his wife he was heading to Vero Beach, Florida, for a job interview ferrying Piper airplanes. He was a skilled pilot and a founding member of the U.S. Army's "Golden Knights" parachute team.
