In the remote village of New Stuyahok, Alaska, the summer of 2000 was marked by the quiet and unsettling disappearance of a community elder. On July 21, 84-year-old Charlie T. Chocknok, Sr., a male of Yu'pik descent, was seen for the last time. He was at the local airport, a small but vital link to the outside world for the isolated community.
