Anton Cesnjevar, a 69-year-old man from Sarasota, Florida, went missing on November 1, 2001, while walking with his wife, Danka, near Lido Beach. The couple had been walking along Benjamin Franklin Drive around 9:00 p.m. when they became separated. Danka reported that Anton, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and could become disoriented, insisted she was walking in the wrong direction.
As she continued walking, she paused intermittently to allow him to catch up, a habit they had developed during their walks. However, after one such stop, she realized he was no longer behind her and began searching the area.
Anton was last seen wearing a dark blue Marz sweater, dress pants, and a white baseball cap with "Arizona" printed on the front. He also wore a gold wedding band and a gold lion pendant necklace. Given his Alzheimer's diagnosis, his limited English, and his strong German accent, there was immediate concern for his safety. After Danka searched for 90 minutes, authorities were contacted, but the initial police response faced criticism for delays in launching an aerial search and properly handling the case.
