In late 2003, Kimberly Michelle Ratushniak, a 25-year-old Indigenous woman from Nanaimo, British Columbia, embarked on a journey to New York with aspirations of finding work as a nurse. She arrived in New York City on November 21, 2003, flying into John F. Kennedy International Airport. Shortly after her arrival, she contacted her mother, reassuring her that she was safe and staying at a "Nurses Quarters" on Long Island, a location that has remained unidentified. During this period, all of her calls to family and friends were made from pay phones. This detail, along with the mysterious nature of her stated residence, would later become a focal point of concern for those searching for her. Communication with Kimberly continued sporadically into the new year. On New Year's Eve of 2003, she spoke with a friend, excitedly sharing her plans to join other friends in Times Square to witness the ball drop. The final known contact with Kimberly occurred sometime in early 2004. In this last phone call, she mentioned she was on Long Island and was contemplating a significant life decision regarding her five-year citizenship, though the exact meaning of this statement remains unclear. After this conversation, all communication from Kimberly abruptly ceased, and she has not been seen or heard from since. At the time of her disappearance, Kimberly was described as being 5'6" tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She has a one-to-two-inch scar on the inside of her left forearm and a distinctive tattoo of a daisy and a butterfly on her lower back. The investigation into her disappearance is being handled by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
