In the early morning of Tuesday, September 22, 2015, 38-year-old Kevin Lynn Mitchell departed from his Anchorage, Alaska, residence located in the vicinity of Birch Road and O'Malley Road. He was last seen at approximately 7:00 AM. Concerns grew when it was noted that he had left behind his wallet, identification, and credit cards. Kevin was a family man with a wife and two young daughters and worked as a Power Plant Superintendent at Municipal Light & Power. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for activities like hiking, biking, kayaking, and paragliding, often enjoying the Alaskan wilderness. His family also owned properties in Lake Louise and Seldovia, which were considered as possible destinations he might have headed towards. A significant development in the case occurred several days after his disappearance when his gray 2012 Toyota Tundra pickup truck was discovered. A friend of Mitchell's found the vehicle, which was parked on a trail near mile marker 87.5 of the Seward Highway, south of Girdwood. The discovery of the abandoned truck prompted an extensive search of the surrounding area. The terrain was described as steep and treacherous, complicating the search efforts. A large-scale operation was launched, involving Alaska State Troopers, Wildlife Troopers, Anchorage Police, U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, State Parks Rangers, and the Alaska Railroad Police. They were joined by the Alaska Search and Rescue Dogs, the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group, and numerous friends and family members, all hoping to find any sign of Kevin. Despite the exhaustive and multi-agency search efforts, no trace of Kevin Mitchell was ever found. The challenging landscape and lack of any new leads eventually led to the suspension of the active search. In the time that has passed, his family has come to believe that he likely succumbed to the harsh elements of the Alaskan wilderness shortly after he went missing. Although he is presumed to have died from hypothermia, his remains have never been recovered. The Anchorage Police Department continues to list him as a missing person. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a story of a devoted family man who vanished into the vast and unforgiving wilderness he so often explored, leaving behind a legacy of adventure and love for his family.
