Carla Mae Burns, a dedicated 49-year-old nursing instructor at Southeastern Illinois College, was last seen on the afternoon of March 8, 2016, in Harrisburg, Illinois. A native of Texas, she had moved to Illinois after her marriage to Dr. Brian Burns in 2009. At the time of her disappearance, she was living in Marion, Illinois, and was planning to return to Texas to be with her two sons after the college semester ended. Concern grew when Carla, who was known for being in regular contact with her family and friends, failed to show up for work for two days and could not be reached. Her family officially reported her missing on March 10, 2016, sparking an investigation into her sudden and uncharacteristic vanishing.
The investigation quickly focused on Carla's estranged husband, Brian Burns. The couple was in the midst of a contentious divorce that had begun in December 2014. Court filings revealed a troubled relationship, with Carla accusing her husband of constant verbal abuse and expressing fear that it would escalate to physical violence. She had sought restraining orders and alleged that he had taken their life savings from joint bank accounts.
