On August 15, 1987, 24-year-old Michael J. Sweet and his friend, Peter R. Carocci, disappeared after embarking on a four-hour fishing trip from Point Judith in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The two men failed to return as scheduled, prompting a search. The United States Coast Guard later discovered their 19-foot outboard motorboat swamped and adrift approximately 15 miles southeast of Block Island. Despite the recovery of the vessel, there was no sign of Michael Sweet or Peter Carocci.
