In the summer of 2015, in the small city of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, 38-year-old John Thomas "JT" Watson was starting a new chapter in his life. Having been released from prison on July 1, 2015, he was focused on rebuilding, staying with family and sometimes at local motels. In early August of that year, he purchased two used cars, a Ford Mustang and a Mitsubishi Mirage, a step towards re-establishing his independence. However, this period of new beginnings took a dark turn. John was last seen in DeFuniak Springs on the evening of Friday, August 7, 2015, driving his recently acquired Mitsubishi Mirage. Another report states he was last seen with two acquaintances in the early morning hours of August 8, 2015, around 1:47 a.m., after leaving a Walmart parking lot. After that, he vanished. His family grew concerned when he failed to show up for work and missed scheduled doctor's appointments. The last activity on his bank account was on the day he disappeared.
The search for John Watson began, and on October 18, 2015, a significant clue surfaced when his Mitsubishi Mirage was discovered abandoned in a large, wooded section of the Eglin Air Force Base property. The keys were still inside the vehicle, which was then towed and taken into evidence by the Walton County Sheriff's Office. Despite this discovery, John's whereabouts remained a mystery. For years, investigators followed up on leads and tips, and extensive searches were conducted by the sheriff's office and partnering agencies, but the case grew cold. His family was left without answers, holding on to hope for his return.
A breakthrough in the case finally came more than a decade after his disappearance. On November 24, 2025, human skeletal remains were discovered near Forest Oak Road, also on the Eglin Air Force Base property. Found near the remains was a set of keys belonging to John's other vehicle, the Ford Mustang. Through DNA analysis, with the assistance of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and DNA Labs International, the remains were positively identified as those of John Thomas Watson in June 2026. The investigating agency has reported that he is deceased, bringing a somber end to the long search. While the discovery of his remains has answered the question of his whereabouts, the investigation into the circumstances of his death continues. The case, which began with a man's hope for a fresh start, has transitioned from a missing person investigation to a death investigation, leaving his family with a sense of closure, yet still seeking answers about his final days.
