Jeffrey Keith Hegwood, a 23-year-old from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was last seen on March 20, 1980. He was preparing for a date that evening, having gone to the bank and purchased flowers. After leaving the Townhouse Lounge at around 9:30 or 10:00 p.m., he never made it home. Later that night, his car was involved in a minor hit-and-run accident, but it is unclear whether Jeffrey was driving at the time. His vehicle was found abandoned the next day on Short Katie Street, with no signs of foul play or anyone else in the car. The keys were left inside, and nothing seemed out of place.
Further complicating the case, six months after Jeffrey's disappearance, his half-brother, who he had never met, was killed in a police shootout in Ontario, Canada. At the time of his death, the half-brother was carrying Jeffrey’s identification. Authorities do not believe the half-brother was involved in Jeffrey's disappearance but suspect he may have stolen some of his belongings beforehand.
Jeffrey was a senior at the University of Southern Mississippi, two weeks away from graduating, and was managing his own bar at the time. Despite investigations and various theories, his case remains unsolved.
