On August 17, 1981, a red and white Cessna 180, with the tail number N3424Y, departed from Anchorage, Alaska, destined for Grayling. Onboard were 48-year-old Kenneth James Fischer and three other men: Robert Hawk, Larry Larson, and William Tiedeman. Their intended flight path was to take them via Rainy Pass, a common route through the Alaska Range. However, the aircraft never reached its destination and was reported as overdue, prompting the Alaska State Troopers to open a missing persons case. At the time of his disappearance, Fischer was described as a white male, 5'10" tall, weighing 150 pounds, with brown, receding hair and brown eyes. He was reportedly wearing brown pants, a brown and beige jacket, and a watch. The disappearance of the Cessna and its four occupants initiated what would become an extensive and ultimately fruitless search effort.
