Terry Hundley's body was discovered by a fisherman three weeks later, on October 29, off the coast of Wells, Maine, but Marisol's body was never recovered. The search for Marisol, which included both land and sea operations, was hampered by the treacherous ocean conditions caused by a weekend storm. Waves in the area were reported to be especially high, making the situation even more perilous for the rescue teams. Family members later identified personal items, such as Marisol's denim jacket, which had been found floating a mile off the coast during the search.
The Hundley family, originally from Colorado, had recently moved to New Hampshire, where Terry had taken a job as town administrator in Durham. Authorities believed the family may have underestimated the dangers posed by the ocean that day, as the powerful waves and rocky terrain created a deadly combination. The tragic incident was part of a series of events that day, as another child in nearby Ogunquit also lost his life after being swept into the sea.
