On July 2, 1997, 71-year-old Beryl Reed and her husband, Douglas, went missing after their private plane crashed into Penobscot Bay, Maine. The couple, along with two friends, were flying from Stonington to Pittsfield. Although the pilot and one passenger were recovered, Beryl and her husband were never found.
