William 'Al' Hamilton was a 46-year-old manager of the Discotheque, a downtown dance club in Augusta, Georgia. His life took a tragic turn in the early morning hours of August 15, 1998, after he left his job for the night. He was last seen driving his 1987 Ford Tempo. Concerns for his welfare grew when he failed to arrive in Sardis to pick up his girlfriend as planned. The situation escalated when firefighters were called to his home on Elizabeth Road later that morning to extinguish a suspicious fire. Hamilton was nowhere to be found, and the circumstances surrounding the fire and his disappearance immediately pointed towards foul play.
Investigators processing the scene at Hamilton's home uncovered grim evidence of a violent struggle. Bloodstains were discovered on a bedroom ceiling and walls, indicating that Hamilton had been subjected to severe blunt force trauma. It became clear to law enforcement that he had been killed inside his residence before the fire was intentionally set to conceal the crime. In addition to Hamilton's disappearance, his car and several bags of coins were also missing from the home. The investigation quickly focused on Rodney Alan Richardson, the ex-husband of Hamilton's girlfriend, suggesting a possible love triangle motive.
Despite the absence of a body, the evidence collected was substantial enough for authorities to move forward with a case against Richardson. In October 1998, a grand jury indicted him on multiple charges including murder, armed robbery, and arson. The following year, Richardson was convicted of the malice murder of Hamilton, along with burglary, armed robbery, arson, and theft by taking. He was subsequently sentenced to two life sentences plus 50 years in state prison. Although a conviction was secured, William 'Al' Hamilton's body has never been recovered. Over the years, law enforcement has received tips and conducted searches, including an excavation near Brier Creek in Keysville, but these efforts have not led to the discovery of his remains. The case remains a painful chapter for those who knew him, a homicide with a conviction but without the closure of a final resting place.
