Heidi Rhodes, 40, was last seen on May 7, 2012, in Bay County, Florida, alongside her boyfriend, John Hughes. The couple lived separately, with Rhodes residing in Panama City Beach and Hughes in Santa Rosa Beach. On the evening of their disappearance, they were seen together, but neither was reported missing for several weeks. Both Rhodes and Hughes were known for maintaining regular contact with family, making their sudden silence and disappearance unusual.
The investigation quickly identified Barry Davis, an acquaintance of Hughes, as a key suspect. Davis claimed that Hughes had hired him to help move furniture and manage his properties. However, Davis was later found selling Hughes's belongings, including his Corvette, which Davis sold in Orlando just days after the couple was last seen. Further suspicious behavior linked him to Hughes's Cadillac Escalade, which was later found covered with a tarp on a property in DeFuniak Springs. Investigators uncovered blood evidence on some of Hughes's personal items, as well as records showing Davis had accessed Hughes's bank accounts after the disappearance, withdrawing significant amounts of money.
In February 2013, Davis was arrested and charged with the murder of both Rhodes and Hughes, although their bodies have never been found. Witnesses, including Davis's ex-girlfriend, testified that Davis had killed the couple and disposed of their remains. Davis was later convicted of their murders and sentenced to death.
