On August 31, 2012, 31-year-old Jaime Gallegos, a male crew member, vanished into the waters off the coast of Kodiak, Alaska, following a tragic boating accident. He was aboard the 58-foot fishing vessel, the F/V Advantage, when it unexpectedly sank. The incident occurred approximately 14 to 50 miles southeast of Kodiak Island. The U.S. Coast Guard received an emergency locator beacon signal shortly after midnight and dispatched a helicopter to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered a debris field and a life raft containing three of the four crew members. The three rescued crewmen, including the skipper Leif Bolan, were suffering from severe hypothermia and were not wearing survival suits. They were hoisted from the life raft and transported to a medical center in Kodiak. Tragically, Bolan later succumbed to complications from hypothermia. The other two survivors were reported to be recovering. Despite extensive search efforts by the Coast Guard, which included multiple helicopter searches and the use of an airplane, Jaime Gallegos was never found. The weather conditions at the time of the sinking were reported as relatively calm with two- to three-foot seas, making the vessel's rapid sinking a mystery. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated the incident and determined the probable cause was a severe heel to port, which led to immediate downflooding and the vessel's capsizing. However, the precise reason for the vessel's loss of stability could not be determined. The F/V Advantage, valued at $1.3 million, sank with approximately 3,453 gallons of diesel fuel on board. The case of Jaime Gallegos is a somber reminder of the perils of the sea and the suddenness with which tragedy can strike. His disappearance remains an unresolved loss for his family and the maritime community of Kodiak.
