On a day in the fall of 1976, 45-year-old Carter Eugene Smyth, Jr., a male resident of Kodiak, Alaska, and his son, 22-year-old Lane Nelson Smyth, found themselves in a perilous situation. The two men were in their small boat near Narrow Cape, just south of Kodiak Island, on November 7th. As they attempted to beach their vessel, the boat was suddenly swamped by the challenging Alaskan waters. This unfortunate event would be the last time anyone would see or hear from the father and son. Following the swamping of their boat, an alarm was raised, and search efforts were initiated to locate Carter and Lane. The Alaska State Troopers were the primary agency involved in the search and the subsequent investigation into their disappearance. Despite the efforts of rescuers who scoured the area where the boat was overcome by the water, no signs of the two men were found. The extensive searches of the region proved unsuccessful in locating them, leaving their family and community with unanswered questions and lingering grief. The disappearance of Carter and Lane Smyth is a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness and the dangers that can be encountered in its waters. The case, managed by the Alaska State Troopers Missing Persons Clearinghouse, remains an open investigation. For decades, the lack of resolution has left a void in the lives of their loved ones. The official report from the Alaska State Troopers simply states that Carter and his son went missing after their small boat swamped, and searches of the area were unsuccessful in locating them, a stark and painful summary of a long-standing mystery.
