At the time of his disappearance, he was reportedly wearing a black leather coat, a white and blue button-up shirt, black jeans, and grey and purple Nike shoes.
He was also said to have been wearing a black cap. A scar on the back of his head was noted as a distinguishing physical feature.
The circumstances surrounding Francis Smith's disappearance are complicated by an earlier incident that same month. He had previously been reported missing on April 10, 2013, after leaving his home to go fishing. On that occasion, he was last seen walking on Bayard Road in Lothian at approximately 8 p.m. Fortunately, he returned home unharmed a couple of days later, on April 12, 2013. The official date of his last contact is recorded as April 21, 2013. However, the Anne Arundel County Police Department has also noted that he had not been seen or heard from since May 4, 2013. It was known that he would frequently walk along Bayard Road and had been reported missing on several other occasions, as he was known to spend time in the woods. Despite extensive searches of the area, no signs of him have been found.
