On June 26, 2014, Trukita was last seen in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after leaving her job at a U-Haul facility. She had plans to meet her ex-boyfriend, Carl Watts, the father of her son, to collect child support money. Concern for her well-being mounted when she failed to pick up her two young children from daycare later that day, an act her family knew was entirely out of character for the devoted mother who dreamed of becoming a police officer. Her parents reported her missing, sparking an investigation that would span nearly twelve years.
The initial stages of the investigation quickly uncovered alarming evidence. Six days after she was reported missing, Trukita's 2007 Nissan Altima was found near an interstate in Miami, having been intentionally set on fire in an apparent effort to destroy evidence.
