Cindy L. Jones, a 27-year-old woman from Wausau, Wisconsin, was last seen on June 29, 1984, following a violent domestic incident with her husband, Norman Jones. A neighbor witnessed Cindy bruised, bloody, and screaming for help. When police arrived, Norman claimed Cindy had left through the back door, and they accepted his explanation without further investigation at the scene. Cindy left behind her three children and has never been heard from again.
Later, Norman confessed to a girlfriend that he had beaten and strangled Cindy and buried her in a gravel pit owned by his employer, American Asphalt Company, in either Park Falls or Medford, Wisconsin. He was charged with her murder in 1985, but the charges were dropped due to the inability to locate her remains. Norman later left Wisconsin and strangled a girlfriend in Florida in 1990. Before police could arrest him for that crime, he died by suicide.
