Mary Elizabeth Rico, aged 50, was last seen on April 2, 1992, at her home on Camelot Drive in Oceanside, California. She was preparing for her niece's wedding but mysteriously vanished, failing to attend the event nine days later. At the time, Mary was politically active and known for championing liberal causes. Initially, a neighbor reported seeing her in the background of a television newscast about protest groups, leading authorities to close her case.
However, her family pushed for further investigation when no contact was made.
When her son visited her home, he discovered disturbing signs, including a broken glass patio door, smeared blood on her bed, and a cut telephone line. Both of her cars were still in the garage, and personal items such as her purse, wallet, and suitcases remained untouched. Police reopened her case, and although a thorough search was conducted, no significant leads were found.
In 1998, police even excavated the foundation of Mary's former residence after workers found a suspicious patch of concrete, but no concrete evidence has emerged.
