In the quiet town of Soldotna, Alaska, 36-year-old Harold John Enzler was last seen on March 27, 1994. He was in the company of his girlfriend, Nancy Bellamy. The couple had reportedly left the home of Enzler's parents in Nikiski at around 9:00 p.m. and were never seen alive again. At the time of his disappearance, Enzler was described as a white male, 6 feet 4 inches tall, and weighing approximately 220 pounds. He had brown hair and blue eyes. Distinctive features included a partially missing left ring finger and scars on both of his shoulders. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black double-breasted leather motorcycle jacket with a Harley Davidson emblem on the back, and black leather engineer boots. It wasn't until May 16, 1994, nearly two months after they were last seen, that Enzler's attorney reported him and Bellamy missing to the Alaska State Troopers. The circumstances surrounding their disappearance were immediately concerning. Enzler was involved in a bitter child-custody dispute with his estranged wife, Mimi, who was in a romantic relationship with a man named Billy Smith. The conflict had escalated to the point where Smith had previously threatened Enzler with a gun during an argument. This history made Smith an initial person of interest in the case, though there was insufficient evidence to charge him at the time. Enzler was also believed to have been preparing to present evidence of Smith's alleged illegal drug use to aid his custody case. Years passed with no resolution, but in 1997, the case saw a significant development when Billy Smith was arrested on unrelated drug charges. During questioning, Smith eventually confessed to murdering both Harold Enzler and Nancy Bellamy. He claimed the motive was partly to prevent his girlfriend from having to share custody of her son with Enzler and partly due to a personal dislike for Bellamy, fearing she and Enzler would expose his drug dealing activities. Smith provided a chilling account, stating that after the murders, he and accomplices dismantled Enzler's 1974 green Dodge flatbed truck and scattered the parts in various areas around Sterling, Kenai, and Nikiski. He also admitted to disposing of the bodies in the waters of Cook Inlet, grimly noting they would never be found. Despite his detailed confessions, the bodies of Harold Enzler and Nancy Bellamy have never been recovered. In May 1998, a grand jury indicted Smith for the murders.
