On April 27, 1989, 33-year-old Douglas E. Cundiff was with his crewmates aboard the F/V Legend, a 42-foot fiberglass fishing vessel, in the turbulent waters of southwest Cook Inlet, Alaska. The men, all from Homer, were engaged in the demanding work that defines the lives of Alaskan fishermen. Tragically, the vessel overturned and sank near Cape Douglas. Douglas was a white male, standing at 5 feet 9 inches and weighing around 180 pounds at the time he went missing. He had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a distinctive scar on his back near his shoulder, roughly the size of a quarter. He was also believed to have been wearing a Seiko watch. The case officially remains a missing persons investigation, a cold case that has lingered for decades. For the families and the community of Homer, the sinking of the Legend is a painful memory of four lives lost to the sea, an event that underscores the profound risks fishermen undertake and the enduring grief that follows such a tragedy.
