Loren James Ruden, a 52-year-old Oceanside, California resident, went missing on September 9, 2013, after setting out for a fishing trip on his 21-foot boat, *The Lucky Dog*. He was last seen by his wife that morning. Later that day, around 7:00 p.m., a man found Loren's dog, Sadie, swimming near an Oceanside jetty and returned her to Loren’s home. This prompted his wife to become concerned when she could not reach him by phone. She discovered his vehicle and boat trailer still parked at the Oceanside Harbor boat launch ramp.
The following morning, on September 10, 2013, Loren's boat was found circling off the coast of La Jolla, California, with its engine still running but no sign of Loren aboard. Although a life jacket was missing, suggesting he might have been wearing it, extensive search efforts covering 600 square miles over two days yielded no clues to his whereabouts. The U.S. Coast Guard and Oceanside Harbor officials called off the search after 48 hours. It is presumed that Loren was lost at sea, but no evidence has confirmed what happened.
