On the evening of June 7, 2015, 73-year-old Wayne William Buckley was last seen in Provo, Utah. He had just dropped his son off at his home around 10:00 p.m. and was expected to possibly travel to Mount Pleasant to register his truck. Concerns grew when Buckley, who suffered from severe, stage 5 emphysema and other health issues that limited his ability to walk long distances, did not make it to his destination and could not be contacted. Relatives in Mount Pleasant confirmed he never arrived.
This marked the beginning of a prolonged and worrying absence for the elderly man, who was also known to be carrying a small. 38 caliber revolver at the time of his disappearance.
The initial investigation into Buckley's whereabouts took a significant turn five days later. On June 12, 2015, his silver and black 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was discovered abandoned. The vehicle, which had a small shell on the back and expired license plates, was located by the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office in a remote area near Strawberry Reservoir. Specifically, it was found on the Co-op Creek road at the Sleepy Hollow trailhead, an area that suggested Buckley may have gone camping. The discovery of the truck, however, offered no immediate answers as to Buckley's location, and an initial search of the vicinity found no sign of him.
In the days that followed the discovery of his truck, search and rescue teams conducted several searches of the rugged terrain surrounding the Strawberry Reservoir and the remote Currant Creek area of Wasatch County. Despite their efforts, no trace of Wayne Buckley was found. Investigators from both the Provo Police Department and the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office have been involved in the case. Due to his serious health conditions, authorities stated it was unlikely he would have been able to travel far on foot from where his truck was located. One possibility raised by the sheriff's office was that someone might have given him a ride from the area. The circumstances surrounding his disappearance remain unclear, and with no new leads or evidence emerging, the case has grown cold.
