In the remote and rugged landscape of Pelican, Alaska, a story of love, art, and profound personal choice unfolded, culminating in the disappearance of 58-year-old Pamela Bealer and her husband, Eric. The couple was last seen on September 12, 2018, as they headed to their secluded cabin at Green Top, a rural homestead on the outer coast of Yakobi Island. Pamela, who lived with multiple sclerosis, and Eric, a renowned wood engraving artist, were known for their self-reliant lifestyle, deeply connected to the wilderness that surrounded them. They had built a life off the grid, four miles outside the tiny fishing village of Pelican, on a homestead they called Sea Pony Farm. There, they gardened, raised animals, and created their art, living in a way that was both physically demanding and deeply fulfilling. Concern grew when the Bealers, who were expected to return by the end of September, had not been heard from by early October. Two friends traveled by boat to the couple's remote cabin to check on them. They found the cabin deserted, but a note was taped to the window of the front door. The note, which was later documented in an Alaska State Troopers report, stated that Eric and Pam Bealer had, by their own free will, decided to end their lives. It explained that they had gone to efforts to hide their bodies and did not want to be found, asking that no time or money be wasted on a search. The note also mentioned that they had taken their dog with them and had set their chickens free. Left behind were boxes and letters for people close to them, along with handwritten wills. The discovery of the note sent a wave of sorrow through the close-knit community and among those who knew the Bealers through Eric's celebrated artwork. Friends of the couple revealed that they had spoken in the past about ending their lives when Pamela's multiple sclerosis became unmanageable. Despite the clarity of the note, Alaska State Troopers conducted a search of the Bealers' properties and the surrounding area by air, but found no sign of the couple. The official search was eventually suspended. In June 2019, Pamela and Eric Bealer were both declared legally dead.
