Rodney Texera, born on August 21, 1965, was a 40-year-old resident of Berkeley, California, when he vanished in December 2005. Living at UA Homes, a public housing facility for disabled adults on University Avenue, Rodney was known for his resilience and independence despite significant challenges. Deaf since birth and developmentally disabled, he communicated primarily through American Sign Language and written notes. He also had an untreated heart condition, adding to his vulnerabilities. Despite these obstacles, Rodney maintained close ties with his family, including his mother, girlfriend, and young daughter, and was preparing to start a new janitorial job.
The Trip to Oroville
On December 1, 2005, Rodney traveled to Oroville, California, approximately 150 miles northeast of Berkeley, to assist a deaf friend with moving.
