Joel Allen Amundson, a 26-year-old from Williston, North Dakota, vanished on October 18, 1996, during a solo bow hunting trip along the Missouri River. An avid outdoorsman and salesman at a local sporting goods store, Joel was known for his physical fitness and love of nature. His disappearance has left a lasting void in his community and remains one of North Dakota's most perplexing cold cases.
On the morning of his disappearance, Joel launched his boat from a ramp in McKenzie County, intending to hunt along the Missouri River. By noon, his empty boat was discovered on the north side of the river in Williams County, approximately three miles east of the Lewis and Clark Bridge. Inside the boat, authorities found his bow, and evidence suggested the vessel had collided with an object, possibly a log. Despite extensive search efforts, Joel was reported missing at 6:00 PM that evening, and no trace of him has been found since.
At the time of his disappearance, Joel stood between 5'8" and 5'9" tall and weighed between 160 and 180 pounds. He had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a vaccination scar on his shoulder. Notably, Joel had sustained two skull fractures in his life—one at age two and another at nineteen—which raised concerns about potential amnesia. His left ear was pierced, and he had minimal body hair.
Authorities have speculated that Joel may have fallen from his boat and drowned, yet his body was never recovered. Given his strong swimming abilities and physical condition, this theory has been met with skepticism by some. The possibility of amnesia resulting from his previous head injuries has also been considered, suggesting he might be alive but unaware of his identity. Despite these theories, the case remains unsolved, with the McKenzie County Sheriff's Office continuing to investigate. ...Read More
