Lance Brabham, a 42‑year‑old pilot from Soldotna, Alaska, vanished on December 3, 2007 while piloting a LifeGuard Alaska medevac helicopter—a Eurocopter BK 117—during a mission originating in Cordova and bound for Anchorage. He was transporting a 60‑year‑old patient, Gaye McDowell of Cordova, who was being transferred for post‑surgical care. Accompanying him in the aircraft were paramedic Cameron Carter, aged 24, from Kenai, and flight nurse John Stumpff, age 47, from Sterling.
Last Contact and Initial Concern
The helicopter’s last confirmed transmission occurred around 5:18 p.m. near Esther Island, approximately 75 miles southeast of Anchorage. The flight, ordinarily taking 90 minutes, failed to check in for scheduled position updates, raising immediate alarm.
