Daylenn “Moke” Pua was an 18-year-old high school senior from South Kona on Hawaii’s Big Island. Known for his adventurous spirit, he was visiting his grandmother, Martha Bear, in Waianae, Oahu, during a school trip in February 2015. Pua had aspirations of becoming a pastry chef and was passionate about photography, hiking, and digital editing. He attended Ke Kula ‘O Ehunuikaimalino, a Hawaiian immersion school in Kealakekua, and was described by family and friends as full of life and ambition.
Despite warnings from his grandmother about the dangers and illegality of the Haiku Stairs—also known as the "Stairway to Heaven"—Pua was determined to undertake the hike. The trail, comprising 3,922 steep steps, was originally built during World War II to access a U.S. Navy radio station. Though officially closed to the public since 1987, it remained a tempting challenge for thrill-seekers due to its breathtaking views over Oahu.
On the morning of February 27, 2015, Pua left his grandmother's home and boarded a bus in Waianae, heading toward the trailhead. Around 11:00 AM, he sent photos to his family from the Haiku Stairs, indicating he had reached the trail. These images were the last communication from him; he was never seen or heard from again.
Among the photos Pua sent, one stood out: it appeared to show an unidentified man in the background, partially obscured by foliage. This led to speculation that someone might have been following him during his hike. However, the identity of this individual remains unknown, and no concrete evidence has linked anyone to Pua's disappearance. ...Read More
