Lance Waiokeola Kaowili, a 47-year-old resident of Kalama Valley in Honolulu, was a well-known figure at Sandy Beach Park on Oahu’s southeastern shore. Born on June 21, 1963, in Honolulu, Lance was deeply connected to the ocean, often bodysurfing at Sandy Beach, a location renowned for its powerful shore breaks and strong currents. His routine visits made him a familiar presence among local surfers and lifeguards.
On March 24, 2011, Lance went to Sandy Beach for his usual bodysurfing session. He was last seen entering the water wearing black board shorts and swim fins. Later that day, his vehicle was found parked at the beach, but there was no sign of Lance. Friends and family grew concerned when he did not return home, prompting them to notify authorities.
The Honolulu Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, and local lifeguards launched an extensive search operation. Divers scoured the waters, while helicopters and boats covered the coastline from Alan Davis Beach to Hanauma Bay and up to six miles offshore. Despite these efforts, no trace of Lance was found. A pair of black board shorts was discovered on the beach, but it could not be confirmed whether they belonged to him.
Lance's disappearance deeply affected his family and the local community. His wife, Casey Saniatan, expressed her anguish, stating, "I've been with him 26 years and I just can't imagine life without him." Their daughter, Keli-Grace Kaowili, shared the family's sense of loss, saying, "Kind of just feel really empty, kind of just lost." The community rallied around the family, offering support and assistance during the search efforts....Read More
