On August 10, 2018, three-year-old Kamila Cabrera vanished from her maternal grandmother's home in Winkelman, Arizona. Her father, Thomas Cabrera, had been granted emergency custody just days earlier, on August 2, but had agreed to allow Kamila's mother, 25-year-old Jimena Corona Perez, an overnight visit. Tragically, that decision would lead to a years-long search for the missing child.

According to police reports, Jimena Perez left a note for her mother stating that Kamila was her child and she was taking her. The following day, Perez called her mother to confirm that she and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Jose Astorga Valenzuela, had fled to Mexico with Kamila.
