On the evening of February 20, 2025, David Klein, a 56-year-old commercial fisherman from Ketchikan, Alaska, embarked on what was expected to be a routine outing aboard his 43-foot geoduck clam dive boat, the Canis Majoris. The vessel was last heard from at approximately 6:18 p.m. when the U.S. Coast Guard received an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon alarm originating from the area north of Thorne Bay on Prince of Wales Island . This distress signal marked the beginning of a perplexing maritime mystery.
In response to the EPIRB activation, the U.S. Coast Guard initiated an extensive search operation. Assets deployed included the cutter John McCormick, a 45-foot fast response boat from Ketchikan, and a Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Sitka. The Alaska Marine Highway System's ferry Hubbard, en route to Juneau, also participated by dispatching a crew on a speedboat to the distress signal's location. Despite these concerted efforts, search teams found only a life raft and floating debris; neither Klein nor the Canis Majoris were located .
After approximately 25 hours of intensive searching, the Coast Guard suspended active search operations on February 21, 2025. Petty Officer John Hightower explained that the decision was based on various factors, including environmental conditions and the assessed survivability of the missing person . The suspension marked a transition from a rescue mission to a recovery operation, leaving many questions unanswered.
On February 22, 2025, the Alaska State Troopers officially listed David Klein as a missing person. According to the bulletin, Klein is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. No known scars, marks, or tattoos were reported . The case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System under case number MP141838 ....Read More
