Torey Clarke Newlin was a 23-year-old senior at Colorado State University, majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management. Born on November 4, 1978, in Texas, Torey was known for his energetic personality, athleticism, and dedication to coaching youth sports. In February 2002, he traveled to Lahaina, Hawaii, with friends to attend a concert by his favorite band, String Cheese Incident—a group he had followed to over 100 shows since 2000.
On February 16, 2002, the group arrived at the Lahaina Civic Center for the concert. Prior to the show, Torey ingested a large dose of LSD, which led to immediate disorientation. He approached a security guard, repeatedly stating, "I don't know where I am," before abruptly leaving the venue. He left behind his wallet, backpack, and cellphone.
A law enforcement officer later reported seeing Torey walking along the Honopiilani Highway near the Civic Center, yelling. He was last seen sitting on a bench in front of Wahikuli State Wayside Park, approximately 0.4 miles from the concert venue. At the time, he was wearing white shorts, a white puka-shell necklace, and was barefoot. He carried no identification or money.
Torey's friends searched for him for two days before reporting his disappearance to the police. An extensive search of the Lahaina area yielded no clues. His family, desperate for information, placed a 3-by-10-foot banner along Honoapiilani Highway near Wahikuli Park, offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to his discovery. ...Read More
