A Son’s Promise and a Family’s Hope

Milton Javier Aguilera Gómez, a 31-year-old Nicaraguan father of two, embarked on a journey in June 2019 with the aspiration of securing a better future for his family. Born on August 20, 1987, in Chinandega, Nicaragua, Milton was deeply committed to his loved ones. His mother, Evelyn Aguilar, had been working in Spain, and Milton aimed to earn enough in the United States to allow her to retire and return home. His dedication was evident in his professions as a computer scientist and tattoo artist, through which he supported his family.

The Journey Through Central America

On June 28, 2019, Milton left Nicaragua, joining a group of migrants traversing Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Mexico. Their destination was the U.S.-Mexico border. Milton had arranged his passage with a 'coyote' named Ariel Suazo Uribe, whom he had previously traveled with and who came recommended by a neighbor. The agreement entailed a payment of $5,000 before departure and another $5,000 upon successful crossing into the United States.

Last Contact and Disappearance

Milton's last known communication with his family was on July 30, 2019. He informed his mother that he was entering the desert and might be unreachable for several days due to poor connectivity. Reports indicate that he reached the El Cuadrado mountain in the Altar, Sonora region. On August 4, 2019, Milton was reportedly abandoned by his group because he could no longer keep up with the pace. A fellow migrant later contacted Evelyn, revealing that Milton had been left behind in the desert.

The Aftermath and Search Efforts

Evelyn reached out to Ariel Suazo Uribe, who claimed to know Milton's exact location and even provided a map. He assured her that search efforts were underway. However, Evelyn suspected that these claims were attempts to placate her and prevent legal action. Milton's brother, Ronny, visited Mexican prisons near the border in a desperate search, but to no avail. The family was left in anguish, with no concrete information about Milton's fate....Read More
