A Promising Student's Fateful Hike

On February 14, 1993, 28-year-old William Anthony McKinnon, a dedicated student at Western Washington University in Bellingham, set out for a day hike on Church Mountain in the Mount Baker area of the North Cascades National Park. Accompanied by his roommate and two friends, the group aimed to reach the alpine meadows known for their breathtaking vistas. As they ascended to approximately 4,200 feet, they encountered snow-covered terrain. Concerned about his inadequate gear—dressed in blue jeans, a sweater, a green jacket, and tennis shoes—McKinnon decided to stay behind while his companions continued upward. Upon returning to the spot where they had left McKinnon, his friends found no trace of him.
