On the morning of September 26, 2015, residents of Cornelius, Oregon, were startled by an unusual sight: a 1994 Ford Taurus left running and unoccupied, blocking a driveway in the 32900 block of Southwest Plum Tree Court. The vehicle belonged to 25-year-old Matthew Pugh, a local welder known for his commitment to sobriety and his close-knit family ties. Inside the car were personal items belonging to Matthew and another individual, but there was no sign of Matthew himself. The ignition had been "punched," requiring a screwdriver to start and stop the engine—a modification Matthew had previously made due to damage to the ignition system.
