A Quiet Morning Walk That Became a Mystery

On July 1, 2020, 67-year-old Theresa Ann Ortiz left her home on Indian Trail in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, intending to watch the sunrise at Burkes Beach—a routine she cherished. She left a note for her husband, Carlos Ortiz, indicating her plans. Later that day, her vehicle was discovered in the beach parking lot, but Theresa was nowhere to be found. Her sandals and an empty pill bottle were located near the high tide line, raising concerns about her well-being.

A Family's Desperate Search

Carlos Ortiz, Theresa's husband of 45 years, was immediately alarmed upon realizing she hadn't returned. He described her as a "very depressed person" who suffered from severe stomach issues, making it difficult for her to eat or drink. Carlos, along with approximately 100 family members and friends, conducted extensive searches on the beach and by boat. His daughter even spent $4,000 to rent a helicopter for the search. Despite their efforts, they felt that authorities weren't doing enough, with Carlos expressing frustration that "nobody cares."

The Emotional Toll on Loved Ones

The disappearance has taken a significant emotional toll on Carlos Ortiz. He finds solace in holding his wife's pillow, still able to smell her scent, and clings to his faith for strength. The couple had just celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on June 23, 2020. Carlos expressed a desire for closure, stating that finding her body would help in the grieving process and fulfill her wish of having her ashes taken to Ireland.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Appeal

As of now, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has reported no new updates in the case. Theresa Ortiz is described as a white female, 5'1" tall, weighing 100 pounds, with red/auburn hair and green eyes. The case remains open, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Sheriff's Office at 843-255-3200. ...Read More
