In the summer of 2016, a 35-year-old Caucasian woman named Crystal Warner and her 38-year-old boyfriend, Robert 'Bobby' Jones, traveled to a remote cabin on Texas Mackville Road in Springfield, Kentucky. The date was July 3rd, and their purpose was to address a matter with their tenant, 52-year-old Craig Pennington, who had reportedly been evicted for failing to pay rent for several months and had not been in contact. This visit would tragically be their last. After stopping at the rental property, the couple from Florence, Kentucky, vanished, sparking concern among their family and friends when they could not be reached.

The search for the missing couple began, and suspicion quickly fell upon their tenant, Craig Pennington. Eyewitnesses later reported a horrifying account, stating they had seen Pennington shoot both Warner and Jones and then remove their bodies from the property. Five days after their disappearance, the couple's gray 2012 Volkswagen was discovered abandoned near Interstate 75 close to Georgetown. Despite the absence of the bodies, the evidence gathered by investigators led them to believe the couple was deceased. This culminated in the arrest of Craig Pennington, who was subsequently charged with two counts of murder.

The grim search for Crystal and Bobby continued for weeks. In August, Bobby Jones's remains were discovered by individuals collecting cans near an exit ramp off Interstate 64 in Clark County. The search for Crystal, however, stretched on for months. Finally, in November, her remains were found in Bath County, also off Interstate 64, after a bulldozer operator uncovered her skull and some personal items under a brush pile on private property. Dental records were used to confirm her identity, bringing a painful closure to her family's search.

Craig Pennington was indicted on multiple charges, including two counts of murder, robbery, kidnapping, and tampering with physical evidence. He was held at the Marion County Detention Center awaiting trial. However, before he could be tried for the murders of Crystal Warner and Bobby Jones, Pennington died in December 2020 from complications related to COVID-19.
