On May 16, 1994, 65-year-old John Calvin Ogle set out for a morning of fishing off the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. Known for his love of the sea, Ogle rented a 12-foot yellow rowboat equipped with an outboard motor, a routine he had likely followed many times before. However, this particular outing would mark the last time anyone saw him.
Later that day, two boaters discovered the unoccupied rental boat drifting approximately three-quarters of a mile off the Santa Cruz beach in Monterey Bay. The choppy waters and strong winds, with waves reaching three to four feet and gusts exceeding 20 miles per hour, made for hazardous conditions. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department led the investigation into Ogle's disappearance. Given the evidence—a found boat with personal belongings but no occupant—and the perilous weather conditions on the day he vanished, authorities concluded that Ogle likely drowned. However, without a body, this remains a presumption, leaving a lingering sense of uncertainty. ...Read More
