A Promising Life Interrupted
Daniel Gilchrist was a 19-year-old Purdue University freshman visiting his father in Moss Beach, California, for the holidays in December 2018. Born in Ukraine and adopted as an infant, Daniel had grown up in the Bay Area, attending Alma Heights Christian Academy and St. John’s Orthodox Academy in San Francisco. He was known for his intelligence and introspective nature, but also for his struggles with depression, particularly after the death of his mother from ovarian cancer in February 2018 .
The Night He Disappeared
On the evening of December 18, Daniel told his father he planned to visit a friend in Pacifica, a town approximately seven miles north of Moss Beach. He left around 8:00 p.m., but his friend was actually away at college in Chicago and unaware of any planned visit. Daniel never arrived at her home. His car was later found parked in his father's driveway with the keys placed on the antenna.
