A Promising Young Life Cut Short
On July 17, 2016, the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago was shaken by the tragic death of 18-year-old Chureno “Cheno” Gatewood. Born on May 23, 1998, Chureno was known for his polite demeanor and exemplary character, traits that stood out despite the challenging environment surrounding him. His life was abruptly ended when he was fatally shot while walking with his girlfriend, leaving a community mourning the loss of a young man with a bright future.
The Fateful Day
On that ill-fated Sunday morning, officers responded at 11:25 a.m. to a shooting in the 5700 block of South Union. They found Chureno with a gunshot wound to the upper chest. He was immediately transported to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m. The assailants reportedly approached him in a vehicle, inquiring about purchasing marijuana. After a brief exchange, one of the individuals shot Chureno, and as he lay helpless, another emptied the remaining bullets into him.
