In the early hours of July 15, 1986, the Abeyta family's life was irrevocably altered. Seven-month-old Christopher Enoch Abeyta was abducted from his crib in his parents' bedroom in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His parents, Bernice and Gil Abeyta, had put him to bed around midnight, only to discover his absence a few hours later. The front door was unlocked, a basement window was open, and the garage door opener was missing. Despite these clues, there were no signs of forced entry, leaving investigators puzzled and the family devastated.
The initial investigation cast suspicion on Christopher's family. Bernice failed two polygraph tests, which she attributed to withdrawal from tranquilizers. Despite these factors, no family members were charged, and the case remained unsolved.
In the weeks following Christopher's disappearance, authorities drained Quail Lake, located three blocks from the Abeyta residence, in hopes of finding evidence. The search yielded nothing. The family reported receiving hang-up phone calls for six months prior to the abduction; these calls ceased after Christopher vanished and resumed months later, adding another layer of mystery to the case.
Christopher's sister pointed to Emma Bradshaw, a woman who had an affair with Gil Abeyta and a history of break-ins, as a potential suspect. Bradshaw denied any involvement and was never officially named a suspect by police. In 2015, she won a civil judgment against Christopher's sister for interfering with her employment. ...Read More
