A Promising Life Cut Short
Ahmad Solaiman Nourzaie, a 25-year-old senior at the University of California, Santa Cruz , was pursuing a degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences. Known for his deep faith and commitment to community service, Nourzaie was an active member of the campus's Muslim community. On January 18, 2016, what began as a casual outing with friends to Bonny Doon Beach turned into a tragedy that would leave a lasting impact on all who knew him.
The Fateful Day at Bonny Doon Beach
On that Monday afternoon, Nourzaie and four fellow UCSC students visited Bonny Doon Beach, a remote and rugged area along the Santa Cruz County coastline. Three of them, including Nourzaie and 19-year-old sophomore Shireen Agha Ahsan, used a rope to descend a cliff to a rocky outcropping. While they were standing there, a powerful wave, estimated to be 15 feet high, swept all three into the ocean.
