Discovery of the Body
On August 9, 2014, at approximately 10:03 a.m., an officer was flagged down to check on an individual who had been found unconscious behind a building in the 00-100 block of East Springfield Avenue, Champaign. Upon investigation, officers discovered the body of Lonnie D. Scheel near the railroad tracks behind a commercial building located at 27 E. Springfield Avenue. Scheel, known to be a homeless individual in the area, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Lonnie D. Scheel, 50 years old at the time of his death, was experiencing homelessness in Champaign, Illinois. He had been having trouble making contact with his family.
