Alexis Gomez, a 21-year-old college student at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), had moved from Mexico to Indiana with his family in pursuit of greater opportunities. Described as loved, cherished, and valued, Gomez embodied the aspirations his father had envisioned for their new life in the United States. Residing in a shared house on the 2600 block of North Bazil Avenue, Gomez balanced his academic commitments with a vibrant social life, often gathering with friends at their rented home.

The Fateful Night of February 20, 2016

On the evening of February 19, 2016, Gomez and his roommates hosted a lively party that extended into the early hours of the following morning. As the festivities dwindled and guests departed, the household settled into sleep. Shortly before 7 a.m. on February 20, a sudden, loud noise startled the occupants. Gomez emerged from his bedroom, expressing confusion and concern, stating he thought he might have been shot, before collapsing.
