In the early hours of March 1, 2014, Denver police responded to a distress call at a condominium located at 5255 Memphis Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless bodies of 23-year-old Dontai Rashad Carter and 31-year-old Richard E. Sims. Both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head, marking a grim start to the month. The Denver Coroner's Office later confirmed their identities and the cause of death.

The condominium, situated in Denver's Montbello neighborhood, became the focal point of a double homicide investigation.
